Along with his friend Mackenzie, Basil came to us for a few years while his family were posted abroad. Mackenzie was retired but Basil was ridden lightly in the riding school. With his willing nature and impeccable manners, he quickly acquired a big fan club amongst the school riders before he went home to a happy life with his family. He outlived Mackenzie but enjoyed a long retirement.

When I visited him shortly before he died I gave him a big hug as I was leaving. He looked into my eyes and clearly said goodbye with a friendly nudge. Another brief but very memorable encounter.
